چکیده

OAKLEY, B. Taste preference following cross-innervation of rat fungiform taste buds. PHYSIOL. BEHAV. 4 (6) 929--933, 1969.-It has been previously demonstrated that cross-innervation of rat taste buds alters some features of the taste input signal to the brain. In the present study the behavioral consequences of these alterations were assessed in a choice situation in which both water and taste solutions were available (two-bottle preference test). The taste preferences and aversions of operated control rats (one remaining IXth or chorda tympani nerve) were compared with those of experimental rats (one cross-regenerated IXth nerve). The reduced NaCI and sucrose preference observed 4 me. postoperatively was probably a consequence of the specific effects of cross-innervation and not due simply to partial denervation. Little effect was observed at 8 me. even though up to half of the existing tongue taste buds were cross-innervated.

Fungiform taste bud degeneration in C57BL/6J mice following chorda-lingual nerve transection.

Taste buds are dependent on innervation for normal morphology and function. Fungiform taste bud degeneration after chorda tympani nerve injury has been well documented in rats, hamsters, and gerbils. The current study examines fungiform taste bud distribution and structure in adult C57BL/6J mice from both intact taste systems and after unilateral chorda-lingual nerve transection. Fungiform tast...

The Effects of β-Bungarotoxin on the Morphogenesis of Taste Papillae and Taste Buds in the Mouse

Although it has been long accepted that innervation by a taste nerve is essential for maintenance of taste buds, it is not clear what role, if any, innervation plays in the morphogenesis of taste papillae and taste bud development. The following study was undertaken to determine what effects lack of sensory innervation have on the development of taste papillae and the formation of taste buds in...

Cellular expression of alpha-gustducin and the A blood group antigen in rat fungiform taste buds cross-reinnervated by the IXth nerve.

Although taste buds are trophically dependent on their innervation, cross-reinnervation experiments have shown that their gustatory sensitivities are determined by the local epithelium. Both the gustatory G-protein, alpha-gustducin, and the cell-surface carbohydrate, the A blood group antigen, are expressed by significantly fewer fungiform than vallate taste cells in the rat. In these experimen...

Regeneration of fungiform taste buds: temporal and spatial characteristics.

The gross morphology of the tongue of the Mongolian gerbil Meriones unguiculatus), the location of papillae and taste buds, and the normal innervation pattern of the tongue and taste buds were determined. The chorda tympani nerve was interrupted to produce degeneration of fungiform taste buds. Regenerating chorda tympani axons followed the original nerve pathways in the tongue en route to the f...

Innervation of single fungiform taste buds during development in rat.

To determine whether the innervation of taste buds changes during postnatal development, the number of geniculate ganglion cells that innervated single fungiform taste buds were quantified in the tip- and midregions of the tongue of adult and developing rats. There was substantial variation in both the size of individual taste buds and number of geniculate ganglion cells that innervated them. I...
